Microblading 101 - Everything you need to know

If you are here, then you are definitely tired of filling in your brows every day.

Same here! And don’t worry because we have your back and are here to explain how and why Microblading will be a major game changer for you, whatever your brow style.

What is Microblading anyway?

  • Microblading is a Semi-Permanent "tattoo", where your artist will draw hair like strokes into your brows using a hand tool made up of tiny needles that form a micro blade.

  • As they use this tool to draw, they deposit pigment into the skin and while this is similar to a tattoo, it is not as deep. This is why it’s considered semi-permanent.

  • Your end result is seamless, fuller looking brows that can be as natural or as bold as you want. The treatment is truly individual and customizable.

  • Once your first appointment is completed, a touch-up to reinforce the pigment is required and then like magic, your brows will be flawless!

So, who is a good candidate for Microblading?

Almost anyone! If you are someone who suffers from hair loss in your brows or even if you have lots of hair but you lack shape, length, or density - Microblading is a great solution for all these concerns.

First, we’ll need to make sure that you are considered a good candidate for Microblading. While we wish everyone could receive the treatments they want; safety must always be considered a top priority. Some contradictions can be worked around but others are non-negotiable. Always reach out to a professional if you have any questions or concerns. But for some clarity, here is a list of contradictions and limitations to help with your Microblading decision.

If you are someone who the below list applies to, you unfortunately cannot receive Microblading or PMU (Permanent Make-Up).

  • If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding

  • If you are diabetic

  • If you have a history of Keloid or Hypertrophic scarring

  • If you are currently taking Accutane or have taken Accutane in the last 2 years

  • If you have received chemotherapy in the past year

  • If you are suffering from or carrying any diseases or viral infections

  • If you suffer from Epilepsy, as seizures can be induced by stress and pain.

The following are treatments or scenarios that are time sensitive and will require a waiting period before you can receive Microblading or PMU.

  • Botox (4 weeks)

  • The use of any blood thinning drugs or high-blood pressure medication (1 week)

  • Use of any Retin A or active skincare such as Alpha or Beta Hydroxyls or invasive facials such as Chemical Peel (4 weeks)

What are we looking at cost-wise?

Depending on the artist you are booked with, pricing for Microblading can range from $400.00 -$2000.00.

The price tag is not cheap, nor should it be! This is your face!

The upfront cost may feel intimidating but when you look at how much money is spent throughout the year on brow products, tinting, laminating... it often works out to be less than you would have spent otherwise. Not to mention, how much time (and money) you’ll save after your treatment by not having to fill in your brows everyday just to have them slide off your face by 3pm.

The Importance of Healing

Good aftercare is arguably the most important step in achieving long lasting, perfect brows with Microblading.

The healing journey can last about 10 days. DO NOT EXPECT your brows to be perfect after one session. This is a two-session process (Initial + Touch up), sometimes more sessions are required depending on your wants and needs.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • For the first 48 hours, you need to keep your brows completely dry. This means no water, humidity, or sweat.

  • You can apply your Glossed Aftercare healing balm as often as you require to help with any itch or dryness that can occur. (Remember to use the balm sparingly; more does not equal better and a thin layer is more than adequate).

  • After the first 48 hours, you can introduce the Cleanse Aftercare morning and night. Be sure to always wash your hands before applying the Cleanse Aftercare as your brow area should be treated the same as you would treat a wound. Remember your skin is open and can be susceptible to infection if not properly cared for.

  • When cleansing, be sure to use only your clean fingers or a clean non-exfoliant cleansing cloth.

  • Your brows will look very strong from days 2-6. This is normal and will subside during the shedding phase.

  • Your brows will start shedding on days 7-9. This can mean scabbing for some, or almost like a dandruff for others. Either way, DO NOT PICK, as this can affect pigment retention.

  • Your brows will feel like they have completely faded and it is normal for the pigment to ‘disappear’ as the skin fully heals but worry not, it will resurface!

  • Continue to use both the Glossed Aftercare and the Cleanse Aftercare until your brows are fully healed (7-10 days).

  • You should see your healed results around 4 weeks post-procedure. You can expect up to a 40% fade from the initial appointment. Then it’s TOUCH UP TIME!

  • Plan ahead to come in 6-8 weeks after your initial service for any corrections as well as to deposit more colour to ensure long lasting, beautiful brows!

Remember that Microblading is low maintenance, but not no maintenance. And generally will last approx. 1-3 years. This is all dependant on the individual and their skin type and lifestyle. As your brows begin to fade it is recommended that you receive a touch up to keep them looking perfect and natural.
